Zarif: Islamic countries\' closeness to Zionist regime, \'shameful\'

Jakarta, March 7, IRNA – Iranian Foreign Minister Mohammad Javad Zarif described measures taken by certain Islamic countries to get close to the Zionist regime as 'disgraceful'.

Zarif made the remarks Monday while talking to reporters after the end of the fifth Extraordinary Summit of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) on Palestine and Al-Quds Al-Sharif held in the Indonesian capital.

Elaborating on the OIC meetings during Sunday and Monday, Zarif said one of the important questions that made the OIC members gather here was the issue of judaizing Baitulmuqaddis and the region of Al Aqsa Mosque, said Zarif.

During the Jakarta Islamic meeting, the participants reviewed the crimes being committed there and stressed that measures being taken in those regions are against the international laws, Zarif added.

The participants also called on the United Nations (UN) Security Council to do something effective towards the issue, he said.

Unfortunately, the Security Council due to the US interference has not taken any practical action to the issue of Palestine till now, said he, adding the (Zionist) regime has done a lot in violation of international human rights' laws and has killed defenseless Palestinians.

He further called it 'shameful' that certain Islamic countries want to be close to Israel while some western non-governmental organizations have taken anti-Israel stance these days for the first time.

On Iran's stance on Palestine, Zarif said Tehran, despite pressures, has never given up supporting Palestinians.

Despite the existing disagreements, the OIC members should not forget the issue of Palestine, he stressed.

The OIC meeting was an opportunity to stress that although extremism and terrorism are major problems for the Middle East region, the issue of Palestine should not be forgotten, the Iranian foreign minister said.
