President: All eyes on Iran’s elections

President Hassan Rouhani said all eyes of regional countries are on the Iran’s upcoming elections as the country is preparing for two elections slated for February 26.

Rouhani made the remarks in an address to a gathering of Iranian laborers in the capital Tehran, IRNA reported.

He said Iranian people would certainly act upon the Leader’s recent remarks over people’s participation in the parliamentary and Assembly of Experts elections which will be held simultaneously.

On Wednesday, Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei urged Iranians to turn out for elections.

The Iranian president also urged people from all walks of life to take part in the elections.

“Massive turnout in the elections would pave the way for economic prosperity, further investment and youth employment,” the president said.

As many as 6,300 candidates, including 586 women, are campaigning for a place in the country’s 290-seat parliament.

Earlier this week, Iran’s Interior Ministry finalized the full list of approved candidates for the parliamentary election after the Guardian Council endorsed their qualifications.

At least 21 people will compete for each seat in parliament, said the official.

In the capital Tehran, over 1,000 candidates are competing for just 30 seats.

Parliament’s members are elected every four years, and former and current members can be reelected.

On the same day, Iran will also hold the election for the next Assembly of Experts.

The body elects and oversees the activities of the Leader of the Islamic Revolution, and is in a position of authority to either appoint or dismiss the Leader.

Members of the assembly are directly elected to office by people for an eight-year term. The body holds meetings twice a year to review major national issues and every other year to appoint a new chairman.

Rouhani also stressed that the Iranian people know how to vote, and ruled out any advice by foreign parties on the polls.

“We do not need the advice of any non-Iranian (side), because our people are vigilant and conscious, and well-aware of its interests,” the Iranian president said.
