Schmid: EU ready to promote Iran ties

The European Union’s Deputy Secretary General for the External Action Service Helga Maria Schmid said the bloc is ready to expand cooperation with Iran to contribute to peace and stability in the region.

Schmid made the remarks in a meeting with Iran's Deputy Foreign Minister for Asia-Pacific Affairs Ebrahim Rahimpour in Tehran, IRNA reported.

She referred to Iran's important role in regional developments, particularly in Afghanistan, saying the EU is willing to widen relations with Tehran in line with bringing tranquility to the region.

She further said cooperation between the EU and Iran will accelerate in the post-sanctions era.

The EU’s official asked Iran to attend the next Conference on Afghanistan in Brussels, Tasnim News Agency reported.

The EU diplomat expressed hope that Iran’s influential participation would help hold the conference in Brussels successfully, considering Iran’s significant role in regional developments.

The EU is going to host the Brussels Conference on Afghanistan on October 4-5, 2016.

Rahimpour welcomed closer ties with the European Union in the fight against terrorism and extremism in the region.

He also urged the European states to boost economic supports for Afghanistan in the current sensitive situation.

Schmid also met with top Iranian diplomats, Abbas Araqchi and Majid Takht-Ravanchi, on Monday.

Speaking to reporters, Takht-Ravanchi, a deputy foreign minister and senior member of Iran’s team of negotiators in nuclear talks with world powers, said they had talked about the process of implementation of Iran’s nuclear agreement.
