Iran urges Europe to back JCPOA in practice

Vienna, Jan 25, IRNA – A senior Iranian lawmaker has called on the European countries to 'practically' support implementation of the July 2015 nuclear deal.

'Iran welcomes European Union (EU) stance on the international deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA),' Alaeddin Boroujerdi, chairman of Majlis (Parliament) National Security and Foreign Policy Commission, said on Wednesday at the 7th EU/Iran Inter-Parliamentary Meeting between the European Parliament (EP) and Iran's Majlis held in Belgium.

The nuclear deal officially known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) and removal of sanctions have prepared good grounds for fostering bilateral relations, Boroujerdi said in the EU/Iran meeting partaken by head of the European delegation Janusz Lewandowski.

However, he said, 'Iran is not satisfied with the Europeans' reaction.'

Criticizing the US President Donald Trump's unilateral move to put pressure on the European banks and companies [to not interact with Iran] shows his hostile stance on the country and also his disrespct for the international decisions on the global questions, the parliamentarian said.

To remove the problems created by Trump, Boroujerdi said that the EU has 'to take an independent stance' on the issue and 'support the European banks and companies to enter the Iranian markets.'

Commenting on the recent unrests in Iran in protest to the economic shortcomings, the lawmaker said, 'staging protest rallies is normal in every world countries,' and for the European's as well.

The Islamic system [of Iran] has come rooted in a democratic revolution, Boroujerdi said advising the Europeans to attend the annual Islamic Revolution's celebrations to find out the level of the Islamic Republic's popularity.

For his part, Lewandowski described his latest visit to Iran as fruitful, and referred to dialogue as the best way for the two sides to get closer to each other's stance.

Boroujerdi and his parliamentary delegation travelled to the Belgian capital of Brussels to attend the 7th EU/Iran Inter-Parliamentary Meeting.
