Dioctyl Adipate (DOA) is a colorless, odorless, transparent oily liquid that is most often used as a PVC plasticizer. Dioctyl Adipate is miscible with most organic solvents and compatible with other monomeric plasticizers used in PVC but it is not soluble in water. DOA is an ester produced by reacting Adipic Acid with 2-Ethyl Hexanol. Dioctyl Adipate has low viscosity, is easy to process and has a long shelf life.

DOA is flexible at low temperatures, has good electrical properties, good resistance to weathering, and good stability to heat.

Dioctyl Adipate has several advantages over some other plasticizers in that it is more economical; DOA provides the desired changes to physical and mechanical properties without causing changes to the chemical structure of the polymer; it jellifies quickly; in lacquer applications it serves to eliminate cracks, increase resistance and provide a smooth surface.

Dioctyl Adipate is mildly irritating to the eyes. If swallowed the substance easily enters the airways and could result in aspiration pneumonitis. Refer for medical attention if breathing difficulties and/or fever develop. DOA is very toxic to aquatic organisms. It is strongly advised not to let the chemical enter into the environment.

Applications:

Dioctyl Adipate is used in the manufacture of a wide range of plastics and coating products. DOA is especially suitable for use in flexible coatings and PVC colorants and in any plasticized products which require good low temperature properties. DOA is used as a plasticizer in PVC paste and pulp mixtures and as an additive in many other processes.

Dioctyl Adipate can be found in many end products including PVC soles for shoes and slippers, synthetic leather, waterproof membranes, paints, varnishes, floor coverings, door mats and hoses. DOA is also used in the calendaring process of paper finishing and in the production of PVC granules.

As Dioctyl Adipate meets the requirements for food-contact materials (FCM), it may also be used in the manufacture of flexible PVC films used for food packaging.

Storage and Handling:

Dioctyl Adipate should be stored in tightly-closed containers below 40°C, in a well-ventilated place. The exclusion of atmospheric moisture is recommended in order to prevent deterioration of Dioctyl Adipate. In these conditions DOA can be stored for periods of up to one year.

Dioctyl Adipate should be handled in accordance with good industry safety and hygiene practices. Relevant engineering controls should be implemented. Personal protective equipment should be worn.
