Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) is a creamy or whitish, tasteless, odorless, nontoxic, biocompatible, thermostable, granular or powdered, semi crystalline or linear synthetic polymer.
PVA is soluble in almost all organic solvents. Polyvinyl Alcohol cannot be dissolved in animal and plant oils and grease.
Polyvinyl Alcohol (PVA) forms copolymers of Vinyl Alcohol and Vinyl Acetate. Hence, the structural properties of Polyvinyl Alcohol polymers depend on the extent of polymerization and hydrolysis. Such changes cause both chemical and physical modifications such as esterification, etherification, crystallization, ion-polymer complexation in the polymer. Modified- PVA structures are useful in biomedical applications.
PVA possesses astonishing optical properties, large dielectric strength, and excellent charge storage ability. Polyvinyl Alcohol’s mechanical, optical and electrical attributes can readily be tailored by doping with nanofillers. PVA is available on the market in different grades on the basis of viscosity and degree of hydrolysis.
Properties:
Excellent film formation
High bonding power
Good barrier properties
Can be combined with many reactants
Water-soluble
Biodegradable and recyclable
No health hazards
Application:
The main uses of PVA include the textile industry, paper making, coatings, adhesives, abrasives, medicines, optics, 3D printing, textile and Glass fiber, construction industries, as well as in ceramics, cosmetics, packaging, food packaging, protective colloid in emulsion polymerization, PVC production and compounding, Thermoplastic processing and electronics.
The physical and chemical properties make PVA very versatile. Polyvinyl Alcohol features high tensile strength and elasticity, as well as resistance against organic solvents and dispersing power.
Reactivity of numerous Hydroxyl groups with substances such as Aldehydes and other reactive compounds expand the range even wider.
Storage and Packaging:
Polyvinyl Alcohol is packed in 25 kg per craft paper bags. Store PVA in a dry, clean and ventilated place.
