Toluene is a clear, colorless liquid with a distinctive smell. Toluene is a flammable liquid which is widely employed as an organic solvent. Toluene occurs naturally in crude oil and in the Tolu tree. Toluene is produced in the process of making gasoline and other fuels from crude oil and in making coke from coal.

Toluene is an aromatic hydrocarbon composed of a Benzene ring linked to one Methyl group. Toluene is used as a solvent or as a chemical intermediate in various industrial applications.

Toluene has a Flash point of 40°F. Toluene is less dense than water (7.2 lb/gal) and insoluble in water, hence it floats on water. Toluene vapors are heavier than air.

Applications:

Toluene is used as a solvent in making dyes and paints, printing inks, coatings, paint thinners, Silicone sealants, many chemical reactants, rubber, adhesives (glues), disinfectants, fingernail polish, lacquers, perfumes, synthetic fragrances, and in some printing and leather tanning processes.

Toluene is used in the production of Benzene, Nylon, plastics, and Polyurethane and the synthesis of Trinitrotoluene (TNT), Benzoic Acid, Benzoyl Chloride, and Toluene Di-isocyanate.

Toluene is also added to gasoline along with Benzene and Xylene to improve Octane ratings. Toluene is present in many household products and also in cleaning agents. Toluene is also used in aviation and automotive fuels, as a solvent, and to make other chemicals.

Safety:

Toluene vapors irritate eyes and upper respiratory tract; cause dizziness, headache, anesthesia, respiratory arrest. Liquid Toluene irritates eyes and causes drying of skin. If aspirated, causes coughing, gagging, and rapidly developing pulmonary edema. If ingested causes vomiting, griping, diarrhea, depressed respiration.

Storage:

Keep Toluene container tightly closed in a dry and well-ventilated place. Containers which are opened must be carefully resealed and kept upright to prevent leakage. Handle and store Toluene under inert gas.

Store Toluene in a flammable liquid storage area away from ignition sources and corrosive and reactive materials. Before entering confined space where Toluene may be present, check to make sure that an explosive concentration does not exist.

Toluene must be stored to avoid contact with strong oxidizers (such as Chlorine, Bromine, and Fluorine), since violent reactions occur. Protect storage containers of Toluene from physical damage. Sources of ignition, such as smoking and open flames, are prohibited where Toluene is used, handled, or stored in a manner that could create a potential fire or explosion hazard.
