Ethylene Vinyl Acetate or EVA is a copolymer of Ethylene and Vinyl Acetate. Ethylene Vinyl Acetate is an extremely elastic and tough thermoplastic of excellent clarity and gloss with a mild odor. The large majority of the copolymer's weight percentage is Ethylene and the VA composition tends to vary between 10-40%.

EVA has many attractive properties including low cost, excellent adhesion, flexibility even at low temperatures, low seal-initiation temperatures, high hot-tack, very good impact strength and excellent optical properties for extrusion film processes and high transparency for photovoltaic cell encapsulation.

Typically, this thermoplastic resin is copolymerized with other resins like LDPE and LLDPE or it is part of a multilayer film. In blends and copolymers, the percentage of EVA ranges from 2% to 25%. It enhances clarity of Olefins (LDPE/LLDPE) whereas a higher percentage of EVA is often used to reduce the melting point and to improve the low temperature performance.

Applications:

EVA copolymers are used for a myriad of applications in the packaging and plastic goods industries. Important applications of Ethylene Vinyl Acetate include sealants in meat and dairy packaging structures, footwear, wire and cable insulation, pipes, toys, corks, photovoltaic encapsulation, medical packaging, hot melt adhesives, and lamination of glass to improve impact resistance.

Hot melt adhesives (such as hot glue sticks) and top-of-the line soccer cleats are usually made from EVA, generally with additives like wax and resin. EVA is also used as a clinginess-enhancing additive in plastic wraps. Craft-foam sheets are made of EVA and are popularly used for children's foam stickers.

EVA is also used in biomedical engineering applications as a drug-delivery device.

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate foam is used as padding in equipment for various sports such as ski boots, bicycle saddles, hockey pads, boxing and mixed-martial-arts gloves and helmets, wakeboard boots, waterski boots, fishing rods and fishing-reel handles. EVA slippers and sandals are popular, being lightweight, easy to form, odorless, glossy, and cheaper compared to natural rubber.

Ethylene Vinyl Acetate copolymers are adhesives used in packaging, textile, bookbinding for bonding plastic films, metal surfaces, coated paper and as powders in plasters and cement renders. EVA is also used in coatings formulation of good-quality interior water-borne paints.

Handling and Storage:

Keep Ethylene Vinyl Acetate in a cool, well ventilated place. Use EVA away from heat, sparks, open flame, direct sunlight or any other ignition source.
