Polyethylene (PE) is a thermoplastic polymer produced from the monomer ethylene and is available in two major types of high density polyethylene (HDPE) and low density poly ethylene (LDPE); the difference is that HDPE has a larger strength-to-density ratio. Poly ethylene is an enormously versatile polymer and is produced in a large variety of grades suited for varying applications. Lupolen 2420D is a non-additivated LDPE that features good heat seal, good optical properties and good processability. It is used for blown film, cast film, shrink film, bags and pouches.

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a colorless, odorless, non-flammable, non-reactive solid. LDPE is a semi-rigid and translucent polymer, which is transparent in thin film form. Low Density Polyethylene is a thermoplastic made from the monomer Ethylene.

Low Density Polyethylene is produced at high pressure via free radical polymerization process. The LDPE is composed of 4,000 to 40,000 carbon atoms, with many short branches. LDPE has a melting point of 105 to 115°C and its temperature resistance is up to 80°C continuously and 95°C for shorter times.

Low Density Polyethylene has good resistance to Alcohols, dilute Alkalis and Acids and limited resistance to aliphatic and aromatic Hydrocarbons, mineral oils, oxidizing agents and halogenated Hydrocarbons.

LDPE is a low-cost polymer with good processability, high impact strength at low temperature, high tensile strength, good weatherability, excellent electrical insulating properties and very low water absorption.

Applications:

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is widely used in raw material for plastic processing industry to make variety of products such as containers, dispensing bottles, wash bottles, tubing, plastic bags for computer components, personal care and hygiene, medicals and surgical equipment, and various molded laboratory equipment. The most popular application of low density Polyethylene is plastic bags.

Due to its low cost, transparency and good flexibility, LDPE is used in packaging industry for pharmaceutical and squeeze bottles, caps and closures, tamper evident, liners, trash bags, films for food packaging (frozen, dry goods), shrink wrap, extrusion moldings, laminates, etc.

Low Density Polyethylene is used to manufacture water pipes and hoses for the pipes and fittings industry due to its plasticity and low water absorption. Other applications of LDPE include consumer goods, housewares, flexible toys, agricultural films, wiring and cables, sub-conductor insulators, cable jacketing.

Safety and Storage:

Low Density Polyethylene (LDPE) is a non-toxic, non-flammable and non-hazardous material and its over exposure by short-term or long-term inhalation does not cause any harmful health effect.

For handling and storage keep LDPE in cool, dark and well-ventilated place. Keep Low Density Polyethylene away from heat and sunlight.
