Gum Rosin also known as Colophony; Rosin, Gum; Pine rosin has several grades, X, WW, WG, N, M, K, with various range of color from light yellow to yellow Red. Gum Rosin is often semi-transparent. Gum Rosin has different commercial grades. W and WW Grades of Gum Rosin are very common.

Gum Rosin is an amorphous, glassy, brittle substance. Gum Rosin is a processing product of pine pitch and is a blend of resin acids of total formula C20 H3002.

Gum Rosin is a solid form of resin obtained from various species of Pine trees and some other conifers. The resin is usually produced by heating fresh liquid resin to vaporize the volatile liquid Terpene components.

Gum Rosin WW grade is an important raw material for the production of paint and coating, paper, polish, adhesives, rubber, waxes, soap, printing ink, explosives, food grade ester gum, rosin ester resins, etc.

Since rosin is easily softened and oxidized, in the oil paint industry, the carboxylation reaction of resin acid is usually employed to produce resinate. While in the producing of synthetic rubber and printing ink, resin acid is changed into disproportionate rosin, polymerized rosin, hydrogenated rosin by its double bond reaction.

One of the applications of Gum Rosin in food industry is to convert oral Gum Rosin to hydrogen rosin in chewing gum production.

Gum Rosin is also used in pharmaceutical and health industries. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a glazing agent in pharmacy. Other uses for Rosin in the healthcare industry include the production of fluoride mouthwash.

Another application of Gum Rosin is the use of this product in industry. Colophony is a material with weak acidic properties that can remove oxidized layers from the surface of metals and polish it. Gum Rosin is also used in the metal industry as a polisher to varnish metals.

Gum Rosin can be used as a raw material in the manufacture of coatings and inks. This product is very chemically active and it is also soluble in a number of organic solvents.

At room temperature Pine resin is brittle, but it easily melts at slightly higher temperatures and is soluble in alcohol (to make a varnish) and mixed with bees’ wax and oil to make a wood polish.
