Glycerin is a clear, colorless and odorless, sweet-tasting and viscous liquid with a high boiling point. Glycerin is non-toxic and miscible with water and Alcohol.

Glycerin is derived from both natural and petrochemical feedstock.  Glycerin occurs in combined form (Triglycerides) in animal fats and vegetable oils and is obtained from these fats and oils during transesterification, such as in biodiesel production.

There are many different types of Glycerin grades ranging from crude Glycerin to refined Glycerin (pharmaceutical grade).

 

Applications:

Glycerin is suitable for pharmaceutical and personal care applications. As it is harmless for health and environment, skin-friendly and odorless, Glycerin is used both as a humectant and an emollient in cosmetics, personal care products.

In creams, Glycerin is a moisturizing component. It supports skin care and, at the same time, prevents the cream from drying out. As Glycerin is also odorless, it is a good base for adding perfume and is used as a substance carrier in personal and hair care products.

In the production of toothpaste, Glycerin is used to improve the taste, prevent dehydration and lend a shine. Toothpaste can contain 20-30% Glycerin.

Glycerin is one of the most often used ingredients for drugs. It acts as a solvent, moistener, humectant, and bodying agent in tinctures, elixirs, and ointments. Other well-known uses of Glycerin include gargles, cough medicines, capsules, lozenges, suppositories, and anesthetics, as well as an additive in antibiotics and antiseptics.

Glycerin is used in food additives; animal feed; as humidifiers and plasticizers for tobacco. In foodstuffs and beverages Glycerin is used as a preservative, a consistency and flavor enhancer, as a solvent for flavors and food colors.

Glycerin is also used in adhesives, agricultural chemicals, antifreeze, coatings, manufacture of electrolytes for electrolytic condensers, fuel and inks.

Glycerin is used as plasticizers and lubricants for plastics and rubber, in manufacturing of paper; As conditioning agents in textiles; As a raw material in production of Epichlorohydrin, Propylene Glycol, Urethane Polymers, Polyurethane foams, Nitroglycerine, Alkyd Resins for paints, etc.

 

Handling and Storage:

Avoid contact and inhalation of Glycerin. Do not get Glycerin in eyes, on skin, on clothing.

Keep Glycerin in a tightly closed container, stored in a cool, dry and well-ventilated area. Avoid Glycerin from heat, flames, ignition sources. Isolate from incompatible materials including strong oxidizers. Glycerin can react violently with Acetic Anhydride, Calcium Oxychloride, Chromium Oxides and Alkali metal Hydrides.
