Butyl Glycol (BG) is also known as, 2-Butoxyethanol, Glycol Mono-Butyl Ether and Ethylene Glycol Mono-Butyl Ether. Butyl Glycol is a clear, colorless, oily liquid with a high boiling point, low volatility and a mild odor.

Butyl Glycol is miscible with water and common organic solvents. This excellent miscibility makes BG a versatile solvent and coupling agent which offers excellent performance features in a wide range of applications. BG most commonly used in the paint industry.

Butyl Glycol is produced by reacting Ethylene Oxide and normal Butanol (n-Butanol) using a catalyst.  If the ratio of Ethylene Oxide to n-Butanol is greater than one then di- and tri- Ethylene Glycol Mono-Ethers are also produced.

Applications:

Butyl Glycol is most commonly used as a solvent and coalescing agent in water-based paints, coatings and inks where it improves the flow of the products as well as extending their drying time. BG is also an efficient flow improver for urea, melamine and phenolic.

Other applications include use as a solvent in printing inks and textile dyes and as a component of hydraulic fluids.  Butyl Glycol is also a component of drilling and cutting oils.

Butyl Glycol is also favored in many products due to its mild od *+    or. BG acts as a solvent and coupling agent in many waxes, resins, oils and textile dyes, and is regularly used in many industrial, commercial and household cleaning products, where it offers good cleaning power as well as the odor typically associated with such products.

BG is also a chemical intermediate and, as such, is a starting material in the production of Butyl Glycol Acetate which is, itself, an excellent solvent.  Butyl Glycol is an important starting material for a variety of syntheses, being one of the raw materials for the production of Butyl Glycol Acetate and for the production of plasticizers by reaction with Phthalic Anhydride. BG is also formulated into insecticides, herbicides, agricultural pesticides and cosmetic products.

Packaging:

Butyl Glycol can be moved in bulk or in drums.  BG has a specific gravity of 0.9 and a flash point of 60 °C (closed cup) and has been classified as harmful but is not classified as dangerous for any form of transport.

Storage:

Butyl Glycol is a combustible material. Keep BG away from heat, sparks and open flame. Store Butyl Glycol in a cool and well-ventilated place below 40℃. Keep the container closed. Under these conditions and at normal temperatures the storage life of Butyl Glycol will be at least one year.
