Dibuthyl Phthalate is a transparent, colorless, odorless oily liquid, with a bitter taste. Commercial samples of DBP are often yellow. Dibuthyl Phthalate is miscible with most common organic solvents and oils but almost insoluble in water.

Dibutyl Phthalate is produced by reacting n-butanol with Phthalic Anhydride. DBP is compatible with other monomeric plasticizers which are commonly used in PVC, and is frequently used in combination with these as a gelling aid as it is too volatile to use by itself.

Dibutyl Phthalate is an ester. Like other esters, it reacts with acids to liberate heat along with alcohols and acids. DBP does not polymerize.

Applications:

Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP) is an organic compound which is commonly used as a plasticizer because of its low toxicity and wide liquid range. The primary use of Dibutyl Phthalate is as a plasticizer in Polyvinyl Acetate Emulsions.

As mentioned above, DBP is used in combination with other plasticizers in PVC applications to increase flexibility and workability. Dibutyl Phthalate is also found in fiberglass and rubbers.

DBP is an important plasticizer that allows major engineering plastics, such as PVC, to be used. Such modified PVC is widely used in plumbing for carrying sewerage and other corrosive materials.

Dibutyl Phthalate has multiple uses in a variety of materials for example, in shower curtains, raincoats, food wraps, and car interiors.

DBP has been used in insect repellents and as a solvent for perfume oil and resins. Dibutyl Phthalate can be used as a plasticizer in Nitrocellulose lacquers, elastomers, explosives, nail polish, and solid rocket propellants. Other uses of Dibutyl Phthalate include perfume fixative, textile lubricating agent, safety glass additive, printing inks, and adhesives.

Dibutyl Phthalate is also used as a medium for reactions in a number of chemical processes for the manufacture of other substances.

Safety:

The primary hazard of DBP is the threat to the environment. Immediate steps should be taken to limit its spread to the environment. Since Dibutyl Phthalate is a liquid it can easily penetrate the soil and contaminate groundwater and nearby streams. DBP is combustible though it may take some effort to ignite.

Storage and Handling:

Dibutyl Phthalate should be stored in a tightly-closed container in a cool, dry, well-ventilated place. Optimum storage temperature is between 2°C and 8°C. Avoid exposure to strong oxidizing agents and bases as this may cause a vigorous exothermic reaction.

DBP is capable of generating electrostatic charges. After opening, reseal containers carefully and store in an upright position to avoid leakage. Dibuthyl Phthalate shelf life is one year from manufacturing date.
