High Impact Polystyrene, commonly known as HIPS, is a versatile, economical and impact-resistant plastic that is easy to machine and fabricate. HIPS is often specified for low strength structural applications when impact resistance, machinability, and low cost are required. High Impact Polystyrene is frequently used machining pre-production prototypes since it has excellent dimensional stability and is easy to fabricate, paint, and glue.

The addition of rubber makes the thermoplastic incredibly durable, with a much higher impact resistance than its former compound.

Like all thermoplastics, High Impact Polystyrene can become soft and pliable when heated, and re-solidify upon cooling. These factors alone make HIPS a great material to manufacture components with.

Applications:

HIPS has many different properties that allow for a wide range of uses and applications for the thermoplastic. With more rubber content, High Impact Polystyrene can easily undergo manufacturing processes such as vacuum forming, and easily bends and molds whilst retaining its durability. Its properties do not weaken once re-molded either; making it very reliable. Due to its amorphous properties, HIPS can be painted making it great for design purposes.

High Impact Polystyrene applications in packaging include food packaging (dairy packaging, meat trays, egg cartons, fruit and vegetable trays), consumer packaging (cassettes and CD shell and covers, jewel box, etc.), industrial packaging (small foamed shapes), etc. Thanks to its recyclability, HIPS is majorly used in food packaging nowadays.

Due to the vast amount of properties the thermoplastic can offer, there are many different High Impact Polystyrene uses. Thanks to its strength and durability, the thermoplastic is ideal for marketing purposes and is often used for Point of Sale displays, handling trays, and promotional signage.

HIPS can also be used for thermoformed machine housing and parts, model making and plastic toys. In addition to this, the thermoplastic is commonly used to make bathroom cabinets and enclosures.

High Impact Polystyrene applications in electronic and appliances consist of TV housings, computer housings and widely used freezer and refrigerator liners appliances housings.

Handling and Storage:

Avoid temperatures of 600°f (316°c) or above. Handling of High Impact Polystyrene may form nuisance dust.

Keep High Impact Polystyrene in a cool, dry and well-ventilated place. Keep HIPS container tightly closed. High Impact Polystyrene should be stored away from combustible materials, extreme heat and strong oxidizing agents.
