Cobalt Octoate

Cobalt Octoate is a blue violet liquid with a low toxicity and low odor. Cobalt is an extremely active and the most widely used drier in paints, coatings, inks and Fiber-Reinforced Plastic (FRP). Cobalt Octoate is primarily an oxidation catalyst and acts as a surface drier.

Cobalt Octoate is the most active surface drier. Cobalt effects rapid surface drying and is generally used in conjunction with auxiliary driers. Cobalt Octoate is a strong oxidant. Cobalt is compatible with all surfaces coating media. Atmospheric humidity does not affect Cobalt drier. This unique feature prevents water vapor present in atmosphere from penetrating the paint film, improves gloss and water resistance and reduces brittleness of film.

The careful use of Cobalt Octoate gives the paint film a good gloss, free from frosting tendency. This drier is a universal drier, which is essential in all the media and is capable of performing individually giving reasonable properties to the paint film.

In air-drying type insulating varnishes use of Cobalt Octoate increases water resistance, but the excessive use of Cobalt Octoate causes brittleness and early failure of insulation. Cobalt is also an effective accelerator for Polyester. Cobalt Octoate accelerates the catalytic action of Methyl Ethyl Ketone (M.E.K.) to polymerize unsaturated Polyester resin.

Cobalt Octoate is a catalyst with strong oxygen transport capacity to promote the drying of the film. In the same kind of catalyst, its catalytic dry performance is the strongest. Compared with the same content of Cobalt Naphthenate, the viscosity is decreased, the fluidity is good, and the color is good. Light, suitable for high-grade, white or light-colored paints and light-colored unsaturated Polyester resins.

Cobalt is the most useful and powerful oxidation catalyst and can keep whiteness. Auxiliary metals should be added to prevent surface wrinkling after drying. Primary metals which can replace for Cobalt are Zirconium, Lead, Cerium and Iron and auxiliary metals are like Calcium, Manganese, Barium, Zinc, Lithium.

Cobalt Octoate is used as catalyst for chemical reactions (polymerization, esterification, oxidation, condensation, hydrogenation and other reactions) and catalystic special applications in lubricant and grease additives, fuel combustion additives to enhance and stabilize the performance of fuels.

Storage:

Store in a cool, dark place and keep the container of Cobalt Octoate tightly sealed. Keep Cobalt Octoate away from oxidizing material or oxidizing reagents as it reacts violently with them.

When stored in a tightly closed container, below 30ºC, Cobalt Octoate will remain for a period of six months from the date of manufacturing.
