Dichloromethane (DMC) also known as Methylene Chloride is a clear, colorless, volatile liquid with a mild, sweet odor. MC is not miscible with water, it is polar, and miscible with many organic solvents.

Methylene Chloride can be used in different industries, such as paint, pharmaceutical manufacturing, paint remover manufacturing, insecticides and spray paint, metal cleaning and degreasing, adhesives manufacturing and use, polyurethane foam production, textile & leather, film base manufacturing, polycarbonate resin production, and solvent formulation.

Exposure Risks:

Inhalation of Methylene Chloride can cause coughing, wheezing and/or shortness of breath. Higher levels of dichloromethane inhalation can lead to headache, mental confusion, nausea, vomiting, dizziness and fatigue.

Skin Exposure of MCE may cause Redness and irritation may occur if skin comes in contact with liquid dichloromethane and, if Methylene Chloride remains on the skin for an extended period of time, it may lead to skin burns. Eye Exposure of MC can cause severe irritation and possibly chemical burns to the eyes.

 

Handling:

When handling dichloromethane in the workplace, use the following safety precautions:

Wear protective clothing. Footwear should cover the entire foot. Wear Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) such as chemical splash goggles and safety gloves. Work in a well-ventilated area (preferably in an environment with a fume extraction system).

 

Storage and Packaging:

Dichloromethane is highly volatile and should be stored in a cool, dry area in tightly closed, labeled containers. MCE must be stored in a place with temperature lower than 30℃ and the relative humidity is lower than 80%. Methylene Chloride needs to be kept away from metals, light and any source of heat or ignition and food chemicals.

Methylene Chloride is packed in tank trailers and galvanized iron drums (250kg per drum).
