Mono Ethylene Glycol (also known as MEG) is a clear, colorless, virtually odorless, and slightly viscous liquid, with low volatility.  Mono Ethylene Glycol is miscible with water, Alcohols, Aldehydes, Ketones, Esters and many organic compounds. MEG is the most important of the commercially available Ethylene Glycols as it has many industrial applications. MEG is commonly used as a raw material for antifreeze fluids.

Mono Ethylene Glycol is produced by the oxidation of Ethylene at a high temperature in the presence of a silver oxide catalyst.  The Ethylene Oxide is then hydrated to yield MEG with di- and tri-Ethylene Glycols as co-products.

Applications:

There is strong global demand for Mono Ethylene Glycol as it is a vital ingredient in the production of Polyester fibers, films, and resins, one of which is Polyethylene Terephthalate (PET).  The PET is then converted into plastic bottles which are used globally.

The second largest market for MEG is in antifreeze applications where it is a component in the manufacture of coolants, aircraft anti-icer, and deicers. Mono Ethylene Glycol is also used in hydraulic brake fluids.

Mono Ethylene Glycol also has humectant properties and this makes it ideal for use in the fiber treatment of textiles, the paper industry, and in adhesives, inks, and cellophane.

MEG is also a used as a dehydration agent in natural gas pipelines where it inhibits the formation of natural gas clathrates before being recovered from the gas and reused.

Mono Ethylene Glycol is used in in the synthesis of safety explosives, plasticizers, synthetic fibers (Terylene, Dacron), and synthetic waxes.

Safety and Storage:

Mono Ethylene Glycol can be stored in stainless Steel, Aluminum, or lined drums, tank cars, or tank trucks.  MEG has a specific gravity of 1.115 and a flash point of 110 °C.

MEG is classified as harmful, and is harmful if swallowed. Liquid MEG is irritating to eyes and skin. Inhalation of Mono Ethylene Glycol vapor is not hazardous. MEG vapors are nonirritating to the eyes and throat. Ingestion of Mono Ethylene Glycol causes stupor or coma, sometimes leading to fatal kidney injury. Overexposure to MEG through improper storage, handling or use could lead to serious health risks.

Store Mono Ethylene Glycol in original container protected from direct sunlight in a dry, cool and well-ventilated area, away from incompatible materials and food and drink. Keep MEG away from strong Oxidants, strong Bases and strong Acids. Keep container of Mono Ethylene Glycol tightly closed and sealed until ready for use.
