Cyclohexanone (CYC) also known as Ketocyclohexane, Anone, Ketohexamethylene is a transparent, colorless or light-yellow liquid with strong irritation and high boiling temperature.

Cyclohexanone is a solvent with medium volatility which is slightly soluble in water, but miscible with common organic solvents, and it is the initial material for synthesis process.

The molecule consists of six‐Carbon cyclic molecule with a Ketone functional group. This colorless oil has an odor reminiscent of pear drop sweets as well as acetone. Pure CYC can be yellowish due to oxidation. Billions of kilograms of Cyclohexanone are produced annually, mainly as a precursor to Nylon.

Production:

Cyclohexanone is produced by the oxidation of Cyclohexane in air, typically using Cobalt catalysts. This process co‐forms Cyclohexanol, and this mixture, called Ketone‐Alcohol oil, is the main feedstock for the production of Adipic Acid. The oxidation involves radicals and the intermediacy of the Hydroperoxide. In some cases, purified Cyclohexanol, obtained by hydration of Cyclohexene, is the precursor.

Alternatively, Cyclohexanone can be produced by the partial hydrogenation of Phenol. This process can also be adjusted to favor the formation of Cyclohexanol. Cyclohexanone can be prepared by laboratory method from Cyclohexanol by oxidation with Chromic Oxide.

Application:

Cyclohexanone is an important industrial chemical as it is a chemical intermediate used in the production of specific target molecules.  In fact, the consumption of Cyclohexanone is linked almost entirely to the Nylon industry with derivatives of it used to produce Adipic Acid and Caprolactam, which are precursors for Nylon.  Up to 70% of the world’s Caprolactam is produced via Cyclohexanone.

Other Cyclohexanone derivatives are used for the synthesis of pharmaceuticals, dyes, herbicides, pesticides, plasticizers, coating, adhesives, varnish, grease, wax and leather coating products.

Cyclohexanone can also be used as ink, nail polish, synthetic resin, synthetic fiber, synthetic rubber solvent and diluent.

Handling and Storage:

Cyclohexanone can be transported in drums and/or tank trucks.  CYC should be stored in a cool, dry, well-ventilated area that is free from the risk of ignition. Storage and use areas of Cyclohexanone should be No Smoking and non‐sparking areas. For transportation purposes, Cyclohexanone falls into packing group III and hazard class III. CYC is irritant and highly flammable.
